How to Detect Grubs in Your Grass

Grubs are beetle larvae that feed on grass roots and can destroy large sections of turf fast. Catching them early is key.

Signs of a grub problem:

  • Brown patches that don't recover with watering

  • Spongy turf that feels soft underfoot

  • Grass that pulls up easily, like loose carpet

  • Skunks, raccoons, or birds digging up the lawn

How to confirm it's grubs:

Cut a 1-square-foot section of turf about 2–3 inches deep and peel it back. Count the white, C-shaped larvae in the soil:

  • 5 or fewer — no treatment needed

  • 6–9 — monitor closely

  • 10+ — time to treat

When to check for grubs:

Late summer through early fall is the best window. Spring is also a good time to spot leftover damage from the previous year.
